Extra Credit Logo Design Assignment: Concrete Finishing Business in Google Classroom

Extra Credit Logo Design Assignment: Concrete Finishing Business

Objective:
Design a professional and visually appealing logo for a concrete finishing business using Adobe Illustrator. This business is family-owned and has previously been operated by the father. He has now retired and passed the business on to his sons. The client wants a logo that has a modern feel but also shows that the company is established and has been around for a while.

Research and Inspiration:•Begin by researching existing concrete finishing businesses and their logos. Look for inspiration and identify common elements used in this industry.

•Consider the business’s values, services, and target audience when brainstorming ideas.

Concept Development:• Sketch out several logo concepts on paper. Explore different shapes, typography, and visual elements related to concrete (e.g., trowels, concrete slabs, textures).

•Think about how to convey durability, precision, and professionalism through a more modern design.

Layout and Composition in Adobe Illustrator:
•Create your concept using Adobe Illustrator

•Consider the design elements:
- Typography: Select a clean and legible font for the business name. Consider using a bold font for impact.
- Iconography: Incorporate relevant concrete-related icons or symbols (e.g., trowel, concrete mixer, finishing tools).
- Color Palette: Choose colors that evoke strength, stability, and professionalism. Earth tones or shades of gray can work well.

•Arrange the elements (text and icons) in a balanced and visually pleasing way.

•Ensure the logo works well in both color and black-and-white versions.

4/24 Assignment: Understanding Lenses - Fixed, Mid-Zoom & Super Zoom in Google Classroom

4/24 Assignment: Understanding Lenses - Fixed, Mid-Zoom & Super Zoom

In this assignment, you are to create and shoot 25 photos that demonstrate an understanding of using various lenses.

You are to shoot FIVE shots using each of the following lenses:

1. Nikon Nikkor 70-300mm - MID-ZOOM LENS (LOWEST APERTURE 4.5
Capture everyday scenes and objects using the mid-zoom lens.
Capture an interesting relationship between light and shadow.
These images should focus on composition and framing.

2.Nikon Nikkor 50mm - Portrait Lens - FIXED FOCUS (LOWEST APERTURE 1.8)
Capture everyday scenes and objects using the 50mm lens. Its focal length makes it suitable for portraits, close-ups, and capturing details with sharpness and clarity.
Capture at least 2 portraits of different individuals.
These images should focus on composition and framing.

3. Sigma 105mm Art Lens - FIXED FOCUS (LOWEST APERTURE 1.4)
Use the art lens to capture artistic photography, offering high-quality optics and precise control over depth of field. Much like the portrait lens, its focal length makes it suitable for portraits, close-ups, and capturing details with sharpness and clarity.

Capture an interesting relationship between light and shadow.
These images should focus on composition and framing.

4. Sigma 150-600mm - SUPER ZOOM LENS (LOWEST APERTURE 5.6)
Use the telephoto lens to zoom in on distant subjects or isolate specific elements within the campus environment.
Remember, telephoto lenses create a compression effect by magnifying distant subjects and making them appear closer together. They also produce a shallow depth of field, blurring the background and isolating the main subject.
Capture at least 2 portraits of different individuals.
These images should focus on composition and framing.

5. Tokina 11-16mm - Landscape Lens - WIDE ANGLE LENS (LOWEST APERTURE 2.8)
Explore wide perspectives and exaggerate depth by using the wide-angle lens. Experiment with leading lines, foreground-background relationships, architectural distortion and forced perspective.
_______________________
A total of 25 shots

As you can probably tell from the above list, all of your photos should demonstrate good composition and creative framing. Remember that in the event that you need to choose between a really light or blown out photo (overexposed) vs. a darker (underexposed), shoot darker.

Once you have shot all 25 images, turn in as a pdf using the gallery template. You will need to adjust it to fit 25 images. Include all exposure information - INCLUDING the lens used as well as the focal length (measured in mm)

4/15 Assignment: Magazine Cover Design with Original Photo in Google Classroom

4/15 Assignment: Magazine Cover Design with Original Photo

For this project, you'll be diving into the world of magazine design, where the cover serves as a powerful tool to captivate potential readers. Think about it: when someone glances at a magazine, they only give it a few seconds before deciding whether to pick it up. That's why the cover image, messaging, and overall design are crucial—they're the first impressions that can make or break a sale.

Your task is to create a magazine cover using Adobe Illustrator. Taking inspiration from existing magazines, photograph and design an original cover image and layout. Feel free to choose a theme that interests you—whether it's music, fashion, food, or anything else under the sun.

Here's what your cover design should include:
An original photo taken by you, serving as the main cover image.
Make sure to apply any necessary color corrections using Camera Raw.
A catchy cover story headline that complements your main image and draws readers in.
At least two additional featured story headlines to give readers a taste of what's inside.
Incorporate at least two smaller inset photos to highlight other featured articles (these should also be original images).
Experiment with two different typefaces (this will add visual interest to your layout).
Include essentials like a magazine name/wordmark, issue date, price, and barcode to give your magazine a finished look.

Your magazine cover will be graded according to the attached rubric.

4/17 Assignment: Lego Mini Scenes in Google Classroom

4/17 Assignment: Lego Mini Scenes

Using the Legos provided, create 20 scenes/scenarios to photograph in a style that uses creative cropping and angles, as well as the depth of field, as a means to tell a story.

The main storyline/action of your scenes should be easy to understand by your audience in one frame. Use creative, tight cropping and angles to assist in properly communicating the action in the scene. The frames should be cropped in such a way that transforms the scenes, making it impossible to tell that the images have been taken at AIT. Also use your aperture adjustment settings on your camera to soften your cropped backgrounds, while still leaving enough visual information to give further context to the scene.

When you are done taking your photos, use Camera Raw to make any additional exposure/color edits. You will use the attached double-column gallery template to create a pdf gallery named the Lego Stories. You will turn in as a pdf.

For each image, provide a name for the scene as a caption and include your aperture, shutter speed, and ISO information.

3/20 Assignment: Business Card Development in Google Classroom

3/20 Assignment: Business Card Development

In this project, you will create your business card using the influence of the mood board that you previously created and using your recently finalized logo. This card will also be a part of the branded system that you are creating so ensure consistency is maintained throughout.

Answer the following questions in the private comments of this post - prior to beginning:
1. What information needs to be on the card? Rank the information that you have listed.
2. What do you want to communicate about yourself or your brand?
3. What impact do you want the business cards to have when handed out?
________________________________________________________________________________________

Important information for a business card:
1. Logo
A logo used consistently on business cards and other print/electronic materials helps to establish a company's identity. An organization with a highly recognizable logo might de-emphasize the business name (size and/or placement) but it is usually an essential piece of information.
2. Name of the individual/business/organization
The name of the individual or the name of the business or organization is usually the most prominent text element of a business card.
3. Job Title of Individual
Should indicate what you do or the service you provide. Can also include "President" or "CEO" or some other title to give the appearance of a larger organization.
4. Phone numbers
Don't forget the area code on phone numbers.
5. Website Address
Web addresses (your student portfolio address) can be listed without the http:// preceding the URL. This feels more modern.
6. Social Media Icons
A business card with social media icons automatically obtains a level of credibility. It makes your brand more approachable, and easy to access– showing that your business has a social standing online.
7. Visual Engagement
Though small, this is another opportunity to infuse your personality as an artist into your layout. Don't be afraid the be fun and energetic – it adds whimsy to your work...many times your branding has the opportunity to communicate what skills you bring to the table before you even get the chance to speak with anyone about a job!

________________________________________________________________________________________

1. Answer the three questions listed above in the private comments before beginning your layouts.
2. Create 1 layout from the 3 concepts that you sketched that use the inspiration of what you have found through your research. Be playful and think differently as you approach the layout.

Be reminded, creatives have a bit more latitude when it comes to individuality on a resume/business card design. Companies expect you to push creative boundaries and be original. BUT, there is a thin line between original/creative and PROFESSIONAL. Rules of layout and composition still apply (choose legible fonts and make text legible, utilize white/negative space for breathability, stick to your color palette, create visual hierarchy and scale to establish important information, use a grid structure to organize the alignment in your layout, etc.)

3. Your final layout concept should be set up and created in Adobe Illustrator.
Specifications for this project include:
*Size: 3.5″x 2″ (standard)...but feel free to adjust this if your idea requires a more custom sizing.
*Orientation: Portrait (Vertical) or Landscape (Horizontal), based on your design.

*Corners: Can be standard or rounded

*Sides: Your card layout can be single-sided (containing artwork on on only one side or double-sided (containing artwork on both the front and back sides)

Grading Criteria:

Creativity and originality of the mood board and branded system
Consistency and coherence of the visual style across all branding
Effective use of typography, color, and imagery
Attention to detail and professionalism in the design
Clarity and organization of all layouts

Each message has a blank art board below for you to reformat the message using a more appropriate typeface — one that helps to better communicate each message.

2/22 Drawing Assignment: Color Portrait Inspired Superhero in Google Classroom

2/22 Drawing Assignment: Color Portrait Inspired Superhero

In today's assignment, you will use the power of color palettes and emotions to craft a unique superhero and costume. You will also delve into character development by defining the hero's superpower, mission, and the world they inhabit.

Based on the portrait that you recreated yesterday, you will use the iPad or Adobe Illustrator to re-invent that person as a superhero with a superhero costume based on the original color palette (including black and white). Specifically, your superhero's appearance/superpower/mission/environment should be influenced PRIMARILY by the mood or emotions communicated by the color palettes of the original images (consider color harmonies and color mood influences from previous assignments).
The superhero and costume should be original artwork, though you may use reference existing images to establish proportions in the artwork. Your approach, brush types, artistic style, and interpretation are completely up to you.

You will only have today's class block to work on this. When you are done, post your final artwork here as a jpg, as well as the original image that you worked from, and the information below in the private comments:

1. Name: What is your superhero's name?
2. Superpower: What unique ability or skill does your superhero possess?
3. Mission: What is their purpose or goal in the world?
4. Explain why you made specific choices for your superhero's appearance and costume.
5. How do these choices reflect the emotions and color palette of the original image?
6. Describe the environment in which your character exists. Is it a futuristic city, a mystical realm, or something entirely different?
7. What role does the environment play in your superhero's story?

Once you have created the digital illustration, you will then copy it onto a new artboard so that you have two of the same illustration. From there you will apply a warm color palette to one and a cool color palette to the other.

In each of your compositions, using both the warm and cool color palettes to bring the city to life and experiment with the mood of each composition:

Apply warm colors to evoke a sense of energy, vibrancy, and warmth – could imply a warm sunrise, summer day, or sunset
Apply cool colors may convey calmness, serenity, and a sense of distance – could imply a cool sunrise, a winter or dreary day or night

YOUR COLOR PALETTES SHOULD CONSIST OF ONLY 5 COLORS (FIVE FOR THE WARM PALETTE AND FIVE FOR THE COOL PALETTE) – Remember to use a range of values, tints, tones, and shades to create depth.

The idea is to illustrate local landmarks with just enough detail to capture likeness but keep in mind that TOO MUCH detail can complicate the artwork. Create just enough to capture the essence of this town, while also showcasing your understanding of color theory.

Create this document at 16x20 (in inches) using Adobe Illustrator. Turn in your properly labeled .ai file (containing both warm and cool compositions on two separate artboards) here once completed.

1/25 Assignment: Negative Space Composition in Google Classroom

1/25 Assignment: Negative Space Composition

Negative space is the space around and between things. It’s the space between, under, and around everything. We are all aware of that space. We are constantly managing to look for it and find it in order to navigate this world.

Not only does negative space exist, but it can be used to create shapes. Normally, we may not see these spaces as shapes, but as artists, it is important to be sensitive to the shapes made by the things around us.

FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT:
Use Adobe Illustrator to create a composition using negative space as the dominant element in your layout. This composition should show the relationship between two items – one representing positive space in the layout and the other representing negative space. Each should represent an object and work together with the other to create an image or tell a story. Too many objects and details in your layout can run the risk of over-complicating your idea – so be careful. See the examples below.

OBJECTIVE:
Create a cohesive collection of five 2-D animal face illustrations using Adobe Illustrator. Utilize reference images to identify and translate the underlying shapes of each animal's face, while exploring the creative use of color and shape to produce visually engaging pieces of digital art.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Choose five different animals. Obtain reference images for each selected animal.
These images will serve as visual guides to identify the shapes that make up the animal's face.

2. For each animal, carefully analyze the reference image to identify the fundamental shapes that constitute the facial features. Identify and deconstruct shapes such as circles, ovals, triangles, rectangles, and polygons that form the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and other facial elements.

3. Use Adobe Illustrator to create a 2-D representation of each animal's face.
Start by creating a basic outline using the Pen Tool, focusing on the identified shapes.
Experiment with different stroke widths to emphasize key features.

4. Apply an imaginative color palette to each animal's face. Consider how to implement color in a way that conveys the personality and the essence of the animal.

5. Arrange the animal face illustrations on individual artboards set up in one Adobe Illustrator document (15 total - 5 that show your animals, 5 that show basic shape identification, and 5 that show your finished illustration with your selected color palette).
Ensure that the pieces work harmoniously together as a unified collection, despite the distinct characteristics of each animal.

6. Save the document as a .AI file. Create all five images into a single Adobe Illustrator file for submission. This file should be properly labeled with your first initial, last name, and the project name (Animal Collection), with NO SPACES.

1/4 Bellringer: What's Your Creative Type? in Google Classroom

1/4 Bellringer: What's Your Creative Type?

Everyone has a Creative Type. What’s yours?

The Creative Types test is an exploration of the many faces of the creative personality. Based in psychology research, the test assesses your basic habits and tendencies—how you think, how you act, how you see the world—to help you better understand who you are as a creative.

These personality types aren’t black-and-white labels. While there’s probably one core type that best describes you, you may change types at different points in your life and career, or even at different stages of the creative process. As a creative, you have a little bit of all eight Types inside you.

Please complete the assessment at the link below. Once you are done, take a screen shot of your result (shift command 4) and post it to your learning blog. Write a brief summary on what your creative type is, whether or not you agree and why. Remember to include a heading.
